Digital Signage Resources for Logistics & Supply Chain | ScreenCloud

Leading contracting organization PCL Construction faced numerous challenges managing its extensive digital signage network. With multiple offices and project sites throughout Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and Australia, PCL completes more than $7 billion USD in work annually. 

With such a huge footprint, reliance on consumer-grade digital signage devices, such as Fire TV Sticks, was proving cumbersome, inefficient, and increasingly insecure.

The introduction of ScreenCloud's purpose-built PIXI digital signage player offered a path forward. Built as a cost-effective and robust digital signage media player, PCL has been an enthusiastic early adopter of the PIXI device.

PCL’s vast and diverse operational footprint demanded a digital signage solution that could handle rapid deployment and consistent oversight— capabilities their previous hardware lacked.

The primary demands for the PCL digital signage network were:

Less reliance on power sockets for media players

Easy setup for both launching and scaling digital signage

A big challenge is that troubleshooting issues often requires costly and time-consuming on-site visits, something that directly impacts operational uptime. Furthermore, many temporary construction locations suffered from power scarcity, making the deployment of power-intensive devices problematic.

Relying on a consumer-grade device also introduced unnecessary friction; the need to navigate app stores and conduct multiple account setups complicated large-scale rollouts.

And, to add to these logistical headaches, there were serious security considerations arising from using non-commercial hardware with less controlled software environments. While budget was a constant consideration, finding a commercial-grade device that matched the low baseline cost of consumer options remained a major stumbling block.

Embracing a simple, purpose-built solution

The integration of ScreenCloud’s PIXI device addressed these  pain points. As Antonio Cacciacarro, Implementation Manager at PCL, noted, the compact size and straightforward packaging made the initial transition notably simpler than expected.

PIXI’s design directly solved PCL’s core operational weaknesses:

Remote device management emerged as the standout feature, earning  endorsement from the PCL cybersecurity team. The ability to monitor status, push updates, and schedule reboots remotely drastically cut down on necessary physical interventions.

A practical advantage discovered during deployment was the device’s ability to draw power directly from a television’s USB port, effectively eliminating the need for an external power adapter — a major benefit in power-constrained job sites.

Deployment velocity increased significantly because PIXI bypassed the complex software setup associated with consumer devices; it was essentially plug-and-play, register, and deploy.

Crucially, PIXI also matched the low baseline cost of the previous consumer-grade hardware, making a wide-scale commercial upgrade financially feasible where previous purpose-built options had been prohibitively expensive.

This purpose-built nature, featuring stripped-down software, inherently fortified the platform against the vulnerabilities present in more open consumer systems.

The shift to using PIXI devices has redefined digital signage management at PCL, resulting in improvements to efficiency, deployment, and security.

Enhanced remote capabilities have greatly conserved IT resources previously dedicated to routine maintenance.  Installation, even in demanding field environments, has become markedly simpler due to the plug-and-play nature and flexible power consumption.

Long-term costs improved significantly, combining the device’s competitive purchase price with the substantial reduction in operational overhead from minimized site visits. Device reliability has also improved, as scheduled remote interventions ensure consistent up time. Ultimately, PCL has achieved a higher security standard without sacrificing affordability.

Why use Digital Signage to display emergency alerts?

In conjunction with other warning systems such as text messages and email, you can also use the Emergency Alerts app to broadcast information and instructions via your screens. With emergency alerts, your screens become another part of your multi-channel alert output, helping ensure critical information gets to those impacted – quickly.

Reach all corners of your deskless workforce - Make sure everyone gets the message and knows what to do. Screens are particularly useful for targeting ‘digitally detached’ individuals. 

Automation you can rely on - There’s no requirement to manually access ScreenCloud and cast alerts – these are automatically triggered by a third party alerts platform. 

Get the right message to the right people - Organize your alerts by spaces to ensure only individuals in affected areas are notified.

Emergency Alerts is an app within ScreenCloud that acts as an extension of an existing Mass Alert Platform such as Singlewire, RAVE and Omnilert. When an event is triggered, we receive a message via common alert protocol (CAP) and override what is displayed on the screens. It will remain on screen until you decide to remove it.

When an emergency alert instance has been set up there is no need to schedule this within a playlist or channel. The instance will simply sit in the background listening for an alert and when triggered will automatically cast to all screens within that space.

The Emergency Alerts feature is available on our Pro and Enterprise plans and is included for all of our education and non-profit customers. If you can't see it in your account, please reach out to your account manager or support and we’ll get you sorted.

What Was the Big Challenge Averitt Needed to Solve With ScreenCloud?

With a vast deskless workforce scattered across many locations, Averitt freight and supply chain teams lacked the kind of inclusion desk-based teams enjoy through office culture and email narratives.

Granger is a trash removal service headquartered in Lansing, Michigan with four different locations throughout the state. Granger specializes in waste hauling, disposal and recycling services to commercial, residential and industrial customers with a focus on sustainable environmental solutions.

Here, we speak to Josh Kindy, Training and Development Specialist at Granger Waste Services, on his experience using ScreenCloud to power their digital signage.

At Granger we were looking for an associate communication tool that could be used to send customized information to offices and several remote locations. We’d always had old style bulletin boards, but digital signage was fairly new for us.

We have five digital signage screens within our main campus, all in different buildings like break room areas. We also have a couple in our remote locations in other parts of the state.  Each screen is connected to content using an Amazon Fire TV Stick.

We share all kinds of human resource material such as safety announcements and videos alongside updates like weather and traffic. There are four of us on the team who manage the information, each focusing on different information, although we can all provide backup for one another on any communication piece. I’m more focused on the training and safety information and my team members are focused on HR and general company information. 

Previously, our associates would only see safety videos during a safety meeting; now we can put them up on the screens all the time. We try to limit the videos to just a few minutes so that associates don’t have to stand in front of the screen for long periods of time, but they serve as a good reminder.

Since most of our associates work outside, either on a truck or in the landfill, we want to make sure the information is available and they can view all of it during the short time they’re in the break room. We usually limit our content to play for a week at the most, as we try to keep everything fresh and this will revolve for a few hours. This is to ensure our team don’t lose interest. 

We use a lot of Google Slides and Noticeboard app, Facebook and then some of the new apps. We also create our own videos, which we upload to the platform.

My experience with ScreenCloud has only been positive. It's a tool that we can use to spread the word about anything to everyone. Anything we want can be put up on the screens and we can customize it to make sure that it's relevant for all of our associates. Our associates have nothing but positive things to say about it. 

We use the screens to share birthdays, anniversaries, training videos, kudos that come in from our customers, announcements and company events.

We also set up different playlists for different areas to show weather advisory messages. 

We want to use the screens in future to share more of our HR statistics and the ScreenCloud team are working with us to help share some of our stats to the screen using their dashboard apps.

How this seafood company controlled remote digital signage for deployed liners across the world.

Sanford is a large and long-established New Zealand seafood company. They are committed to looking after the marine environments in which they operate, to provide customers with top quality, sustainably harvested seafood. They needed a digital signage system that could scale - and that could be implemented easily out on a barge in Stewart Island or in an ocean liner that would be out fishing for six months of the year.

To find a system that could work with a satellite connection to a vessel from anywhere in the world

Here, we speak to Liam Bradford, IT Tech Support Engineer at Sanford, on his experience using ScreenCloud and digital signage.

We needed a platform where we could leverage multiple different types of content and media from a scalable cloud-based infrastructure. It needed to be able to quickly and effectively share important news, media, and events with our entire business, whether our personnel are floating on a barge in the middle of Big Glory bay in Stewart Island or out in the ocean for months at a time, fishing atlantic toothfish.

We initially tried other digital signage systems, but eventually found ScreenCloud which we believed was going to offer us the best solution for the best price. 

We have several different types of hardware that we use for our digital signage but mostly we use the Amazon Fire TV stick. One of the initial challenges was that the deep sea fleet remains connected to the internet via a satellite link. This is high bandwidth but also very high latency (two-second round trip) through a laser guided gyroscopic dish that occasionally will disconnect to unwind itself. For this to work, we needed to use an Amazon Fire TV Box and a 32GB SD Card for caching most, if not all, of the content required. This in itself is no mean feat because they don't sell or support them in New Zealand. With the help of the ScreenCloud support team we managed to find the right media players and get them up and running, for a long-term solution. 

We do much of our content creation in house with many staff handling the content for their own respective areas and departments.

ScreenCloud has helped us to be a lot more proactive with our internal communications because they can be controlled remotely. This makes it easier for our digital signage to be centrally managed, giving us easier deployment across the entire business. It also means that all of our hardware is independent from our content which means no need for backups or any disaster recovery plans.
