How much revenue did your website process today? This week? This month?

Did that marketing campaign actually lift your revenue month-over-month? Did the invoices your sales team sent out last week get paid? Is churn up or down? Are you spending more on fees as a percentage of revenue?

Stripe’s a powerful tool to build and grow your business in large part because it takes the guesswork out of finances. Instead of figuring out credit card charges and bank transfers, you have one platform for payments that covers everything.

The data in Stripe is some of the most important for your business—data that, odds are, everyone in your team can’t access. Executives have access to the stripe dashboard app, your finance team has Stripe accounts, your dev team has API access, but sales and marketing teams are either left in the dark or wasting time every week digging through Stripe data to figure out what’s what.

There’s a better way: Build a Stripe sales tracker and reporting dashboard, and put that information on your office TV where everyone can see. It will show your company’s most important Stripe data in a glance on digital signage, and keep everyone on the same page. 

Build custom dashboards that fit your team's needs

Everyone on your team with a Stripe account gets a good overview of your revenue every time they log in. Gross sales volume, account balance, upcoming debits, along with a quick look back at the past week’s revenue by default. Click the dropdown menus on each widget to see a different time frame or data set (say, to see new customers or net payments volume, instead).

You can customize that default view, too. Click the Add button to choose from over a dozen default widgets, including Invoices, average spend per customer, top payment methods, and more. Or, click Edit to rearrange the widgets and remove any that your business doesn’t need.

That customized business finances overview will then show up whenever you open the Stripe home tab. Log out, refresh, and the same widgets and timeframe you selected will still be there.

Customized data dashboards aren’t shared across teams, though. Each user will see the default Stripe widgets and can tweak their dashboard as they wish. 

Good for teams that need to see different details—a collections team might want to see disputed and high risk payments, while a sales team might be more interested in payments breakdown or outstanding invoices—but a bit more trouble for each person when they’re starting out.

One thing to note: Similar to how you might silo production dashboard data, you might not want to hand out full Stripe access to everyone in your company. Whenever you invite someone to your Stripe team, you can choose their member roles. Stripe’s default Support Specialist role, for example, can refund payments and view logs, but it can’t view account balances or transfer money. 

Developers, on the other hand, can do almost everything in a Stripe account aside from transfer balances, add bank account details, and change team members.

For people who need access to sales data—and nothing else—a View Only role is perfect. They can see details about sales and paid invoices, enough to fill out a full Stripe Home dashboard, without having access to bank account details, invoice payments, and other critical financial settings. 

Invite team members with that role, suggest the widgets they should add to their dashboard, and they’ll be able to make more informed decisions while keeping your company’s core Stripe details secure. It’s a way, especially in smaller companies, to share Stripe data internally.

Use Looker Studio or Power BI with Stripe to display custom dashboards

We recommend building a separate dashboard that contains the Stripe data everyone in the company should see—and nothing else. Instead of sharing access with each team member so they can build a custom dashboard, you build a single dashboard and share it with everyone. Or, better yet, you can put the dashboard on an office TV or other digital signage so everyone can see financial stats at a glance.

Many dashboard-focused tools include Stripe integrations to pull in data and turn into easy-to-glance charts. Geckoboard, for example, can pull in Stripe subscription data—which could be a great option for SaaS companies, while those selling one-off products and billing for services via invoices need other options. Others, including scraping tools, come up against Stripe’s security protections.

One of the most flexible options is to use a data visualization tool like Google’s Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio) or Microsoft Power BI. Both tools can import a CSV export of Stripe data (perhaps paired with a Zapier automation to add new data—more on that below), or use 3rd party integrations to pull live Stripe data in and keep it updated.

Start by connecting your data. Power BI requires a paid account to add data integrations. In paid accounts, open the Apps pane, click Get Apps, and search for Stripe to pick from the 3rd party options. Google Looker Studio includes integrations on its free plan—though you will need to pay for the connector. Open a new Looker report, click the Add data button, search for Stripe, and add an integration.

From our testing, the best Google Looker Studio option is Supermetrics (from $69/month for the Essential plan plus an additional $35/month to add the Stripe integration from the Super plan—or check with their sales for Power BI plans). Add it to your account, connect it to Stripe, then you can pull any Stripe data you want into Looker Studio in seconds.

Alternatively, you could use Zapier’s Transfer tool to sync past data, then keep it updated going forward (from $19.99/month for a Starter plan, to import or add 750 items each month). 

Zapier imports one type of data from Stripe at a time—payments, customers, subscriptions, or invoices. Then have Zapier save the data to Excel to import to Power BI, or to Google Sheets to import to Looker Studio, matching up each field from Stripe to your spreadsheet. You can preview the data and add filters to restrict what gets transferred. Finally, set how often to import the data—once, or every hour, day, week, or month.

2. Build dashboards and customize your widgets

Say you want to see how much revenue your company made this month. Click Add a Chart, select a Scorecard, then in the right column choose your Stripe data from Supermetrics or your Google Sheets spreadsheet with Zapier-powered Stripe data. Choose Charge Net for payments minus fees, or Charge amount for the total payment. Google Data Studio will typically automatically sum up all charges over the past week.

You can then set the date period you want, or tweak the value to show, say, an individual value (for the most recent sale) or an average (for your average order size). The default widget name might be a bit unwieldy; edit it to something easier for your team to understand. Hover over the Metric, click the pencil icon, and there you can both set a new name and format the data as currency, percentage, and more.

Repeat that for every graph and data point you want to share, with stacked columns to show sales vs fees, say, geo charts to visualize where customers live, or Treemaps to highlight which of your products are most popular with customers. There’s even a gauge dial—perfect to list both a sales target and how close the business is to hitting the goal this quarter.

Finally, add branding to your dashboard. Click the Style tab for each widget to customize its font, text size, legends, background color, and more to build an easy-to-read dashboard for your team. Or, click the Theme and layout button in the top toolbar to select a prebuilt theme—or get Looker to create a new theme from an image of your website or other branded content.

Now you can share your Stripe dashboard with your team. There are a few ways to go about that.

How to display your Stripe dashboard on the office TV

Step 2: Push new Stripe data to Digital Signage

There’s one more easy way to let your team know about new sales (or refunds, invoices, or any other Stripe data you care about). This time, you’ll use Zapier to watch for a new sale, then send the data to ScreenCloud via a Webhook.

You could even add one extra step to your Zapier automation to share the new sale to Slack or other team software, if you want.

Now, add your Playgrounds screen to your digital signage playlists, and whenever a new sale comes in, that slide will automatically show it to the team.
