Here’s the research:
4.6 seconds. That's the average amount of time a passer-by's face stays turned toward a screen, according to audience-measurement research from Quividi, a company that's spent two decades doing nothing but measure exactly this. (Some screens get as little as 1.5 seconds. The generous end of the range is 27.)
Whatever number your own screen lands on, the shape of the problem is the same. Your screens get a glance, then the moment is gone.
The one advantage you already have
Before the bad news, the good news! And it's genuine.
Research from UCL, commissioned in partnership with us, found something called the ‘illusion of depth.’ Picture a laptop on someone's desk and a screen mounted on the opposite wall. Both can fill the same amount of a person's field of view. But the wall-mounted screen commands a disproportionately larger share of their cognitive attention, regardless of what's actually on it.
That's not a design choice. It's physiology. A mounted display has a structural advantage over a laptop tab or a phone notification before a single word of content has been written. Most organisations don't know they're sitting on this advantage, which means most organisations aren't using it for anything.
Two ways of being noticed. (and you need both)
Not all attention works the same way. UCL's research distinguishes two kinds of eye movement, and it matters more than it sounds.
‘Bottom-up’ attention is involuntary. Triggered by contrast, motion, flashes, anything that physically interrupts. It's the mechanism you want for an emergency message or a safety alert: content that grabs someone regardless of what they were thinking about a second ago.
‘Top-down’ attention is different. It's driven by intrigue, and it's what fixes on concepts, words, and structured information. It's slower to trigger, but it's the mechanism behind whether something actually gets remembered, not just glimpsed.
Here's the failure mode: most workplace content is built for neither. A stock template doesn't have the contrast or motion to trigger bottom-up attention, and it doesn't have the structure or intrigue to trigger top-down attention either. It just... sits there, technically visible, actually invisible.
Why stress erodes the message, not just the noise around it
There's a third factor working against you, and it's the one advertising doesn't have to contend with in the same way: your audience is often stressed. UCL's research points to the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for encoding and retrieving memories, and a specific, uncomfortable finding: under high stress, the hippocampus stops processing memories properly.
A commuter watching a 30-second ad is, generally, not mid-shift. An employee walking past a break room screen is often rushed, task-switching, thinking about the next thing. The advertising industry gets a relatively calm nervous system to work with. Internal comms usually doesn't. Which means the bar for getting through isn't just ‘be noticed.’ It's 'be noticed by someone whose brain is actively worse at holding onto what it sees right now.’
The 4.6-second test
Here's a genuinely useful exercise, and it costs nothing. Stand in front of the screen your employees pass most often, at the busiest point in their day, with a stopwatch. Give yourself 4.6 seconds, no more, and ask honestly: did anything land with you? Was there enough contrast or movement to interrupt someone bottom-up? Was there enough structure to be worth top-down attention if it did? Would it have survived being read by someone who's stressed, rushed, and thinking about something else?
Most organisations, doing this exercise for the first time, find the honest answer is no. That's not a failure of effort. Nobody built the content with 4.6 seconds, an illusion of depth, or a stressed hippocampus in mind, because nobody told them these were the actual physical constraints they were working within.
The next question gets sharper: not ‘how do we get more attention,’ but ‘why was this ever built as if attention wasn't the constraint at all?’
