Frontline workers keep businesses moving, but our research shows they’re often the last to know what’s happening. On average, it takes 4.5 days for frontline employees to receive important company information, and in telecommunications, it stretches to 7.38 days. That’s almost a full week lost before updates reach the people most critical to operations.

These findings come from a study conducted by Unily in partnership with ScreenCloud, with research carried out by Censuswide. The survey gathered insights from 800 frontline workers across North America, spanning industries like healthcare, retail, manufacturing, aviation, and telecommunications. Respondents all came from enterprises with 10,000+ employees and revenues of $10 billion or more, giving a clear view of the challenges faced at scale.

The challenges of internal comms for frontline employees

It takes an average of 4.5 days for information to reach frontline employees. But that’s only part of the problem. 27% of frontline workers say they get conflicting communication between HQ and local teams.

This paints a clear picture: Frontline workers received delayed, and often conflicting instructions. 

Here’s how these lead to a communication breakdown.

Our research shows a clear disconnect between leadership and the frontline. Nearly three-quarters of frontline workers (72%) say they don’t have a strong grasp of their company’s strategy, and 64% admit they don’t understand leadership priorities. Another 30% believe leaders need to do a better job of communicating strategy altogether.

The bigger issue is that their voices aren’t reaching leadership. Less than a quarter (24%) feel their feedback is heard, and only 29% say they feel a sense of belonging at their organization. 

For employees who engage with customers daily, feeling ignored leaves them working without direction and without the chance to influence decisions that could improve outcomes.

Information doesn’t just arrive late; it often arrives too late to matter, taking 4.5 days on average.

During these delays, decisions are made without frontline input. Safety and compliance risks increase, and employees feel unprepared to deliver on company priorities. For sectors like healthcare and aviation, where every moment matters, this lack of timely communication affect safety and service quality.

Even when information does reach the frontline, it’s not always consistent. The study found 27% of workers receive conflicting updates between HQ and local teams, with the number rising to 42% in telecommunications.

These contradictions lead to mistakes, wasted effort, and slower service. When frontline staff are left to decide which message to trust, it erodes confidence in leadership and leaves teams misaligned. Employees end up second-guessing their instructions instead of focusing on customers.

4. Critical communication is breaking down

When official systems don’t meet their needs, frontline workers find workarounds. 71% of employees use unauthorized apps to access important information, creating security risks and leaving sensitive data outside company controls. Essentially exposing the company to the dangers of shadow IT.

In some cases, the gaps are even more basic. 32% of manufacturing employees still rely on word-of-mouth for updates, meaning information can be distorted or missed entirely. These cracks are most dangerous during emergencies, when frontline teams are often the first affected. 

Without fast, reliable channels, response times are slowed and compliance becomes harder to enforce.

Training should be a clear path to supporting and developing frontline teams. Instead, 56% of workers say communication about training is inadequate, while 55% don’t know what programs exist at all.

This lack of clarity reinforces inequality between office staff and the frontline, with 36% of workers saying office colleagues get better access to training. In aviation, 26% of employees believe they could be more productive if training was more accessible. 

Poor communication in this area leaves staff frustrated, managers unable to build skills pipelines, and businesses missing out on productivity gains.

4 ways to keep your frontline workers connected in communication

Our joint study shows that communication breakdowns on the frontline are systemic, not random. But the same data also points to clear actions enterprises can take. Below are four key areas to focus on, each directly tied to what frontline employees told us during the study.

1. Communicate strategy in ways that resonate with the frontline

When 72% of frontline workers say they don’t have a strong grasp of company strategy and 64% don’t understand leadership priorities, it’s clear that traditional communication channels aren’t working. Long email briefings or one-off town halls may reach office staff, but they don’t connect with employees on the shop floor, in the warehouse, or field-based employees.

Enterprises need to translate strategy into clear, digestible updates delivered through the tools frontline workers already use. That could mean mobile apps for shift workers, or digital signage screens in break rooms and common areas where updates can’t be missed. 

Consistency matters here, too. If employees hear different messages from HQ and local managers, confusion sets in. A single, centralized system of communication helps avoid the 27% of workers who reported receiving conflicting information.

Only 24% of employees believe their feedback is heard by leadership. This silence comes at a cost. Workers are closest to customers and day-to-day operations, so their ideas are often the fastest way to spot inefficiencies or identify new opportunities.

To change this, companies need structured, visible feedback channels. That might look like pulse surveys delivered to employees’ phones, suggestion tools integrated into digital signage, or weekly check-ins that feed directly to management dashboards. The key is not just collecting feedback, but acting on it. 

Once workers see their ideas implemented, or at least acknowledged, employee engagement rises and the sense of belonging, which only 29% of frontline employees report today, starts to improve.

It’s no surprise, then, that 71% of employees resort to using unauthorized apps just to stay informed. These stopgap solutions may help workers in the moment, but they expose enterprises to security risks and compliance issues.

Real-time digital tools solve both problems. Mobile-first apps deliver instant updates to employees no matter where they are, while digital signage ensures those without personal devices are kept just as informed. 

The benefits are clear: 84% of decision-makers in the study said digital signage improves engagement, and 87% believe it strengthens health and safety compliance. 

The data shows that frontline training often fails because workers don’t even know what’s available. More than half (56%) say communication about training is inadequate, and 55% admit they’re unaware of the programs their company offers. This reduces overall productivity and leaves enterprises struggling to close skills gaps. 

In aviation, for example, 26% of workers believe they could be more productive if they had better access to training materials.

The solution is to put training where workers can see it. That might be reminders on break-room screens, links to training modules via mobile apps, or a structured rollout calendar shared across shifts. 

Just as importantly, enterprises should make access equitable. 36% of frontline workers already believe office-based colleagues have better training opportunities. Closing that gap means showing frontline staff that their development matters just as much as anyone else’s.
